UAE Unveils Bold Initiative to Strengthen Africas Food Security

The United Arab Emirates is striving to enhance food security in Africa by expanding its trade relationships with countries on the continent, aiming to capitalize on rapid economic developments. As the second-largest trading partner for sub-Saharan Africa after China, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to making strategic investments aimed at addressing food challenges and seizing available economic opportunities.

UAE Investments in Africa

Reports indicate that the UAE has invested approximately $119 billion across various sectors in Africa, ranging from agriculture and renewable energy to port development. In this context, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Saeed bin Mubarak Al-Hajeri, stated that “the opportunities in Africa appear more attractive than investing in mature or declining markets.”

Al-Hajeri noted that the UAE has joined a group of major investors in the continent, including Europe, China, and the United States, to embark on an investment race aimed at utilizing the rich resources in the world’s youngest market, which often experiences economic growth rates that surpass those of developed countries.

Trade with Africa: Numbers and Implications

As the UAE strengthens its position in the African arena, the value of trade with sub-Saharan African countries surpassed $75 billion last year, three times its level a decade ago. This illustrates the UAE’s strong determination to enhance food security in Africa as part of its broader economic strategy.

Food Security as a Strategic Priority

During the G20 summit in Johannesburg, the UAE’s Foreign Minister emphasized that “the food security strategy is one of the fundamental pillars in our dealings with Africa, especially since we import 80% of our food needs.” The minister highlighted the importance of resources and logistics, as well as connecting the aviation and port sectors with Africa.

Future Partnerships

As part of its advanced plans, the UAE is currently negotiating to sign comprehensive economic partnership agreements with several African countries, reflecting its commitment to enhancing food security in Africa. These partnerships, which include countries such as Mauritius, Morocco, and the Central African Republic, aim to achieve sustainable development goals and facilitate trade on a broader scale.
