In celebration of World Urban Planning Day, the Sharjah Department of Planning and Survey, in collaboration with the Emirates Urban Planning Association, organized a series of events reflecting its commitment to sustainable urban planning. This initiative aims to provide competitive services that elevate the quality of life in Sharjah. By promoting the concept of sustainable urban planning, Sharjah showcases its pioneering role in achieving balanced urban development that respects local identity while keeping pace with global advancements.
Workshops and Knowledge Sharing
The events commenced with a training workshop titled “Urban Planning: Balancing Local Identity and Global Vision,” conducted by expert Stephen Goldie from the Emirates Urban Planning Association. This session explored crucial topics such as sustainable planning, urban transformation, and visual identity. The workshop aimed to exchange expertise among specialists and enhance knowledge of the latest trends in sustainable urban planning, illustrating the significance of informed planning practices in contemporary urban contexts.
Enhancing Residential Areas
Additionally, a workshop on the “More Beautiful Neighborhoods” initiative was presented by Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Director of Urban Appearance at the Department of Planning and Survey. During this session, he discussed the initiative’s objectives, which seek to enhance the urban appearance and aesthetic value of residential neighborhoods. The project aims to raise community awareness regarding the importance of maintaining public aesthetics and addressing visual distortions, guiding owners, developers, and consultants toward adopting architectural designs that prioritize both beauty and environmental sustainability.
Showcasing Innovative Planning Projects
The festivities also featured the opening of an urban planning exhibition that showcased three innovative projects representing the evolution of planning thought and architecture in the emirate. One highlight included the planning project for the “Al-Mahatta” area in Khor Fakkan, covering an area of 277,979 square meters. This project aims to develop the area into a sustainable urban model with a distinctive local identity, focusing on reviving historical and architectural values by showcasing heritage landmarks such as historical airstrips, forts, and mosques, merging tradition with modernity through sustainable practices.
Support for Sustainable Residential Designs
The exhibition also featured model plans for villas approved by the Department of Planning and Survey, available on its website, exceeding 200 three-dimensional designs. Additionally, more than 160 models for residential annexes were displayed, ranging from service annexes to sporting facilities and guard rooms. This reflects the department’s commitment to offering modern and approved designs that cater to varied family needs, facilitating the permit and residential planning process. Such initiatives are vital in aligning with Sharjah’s aspirations for sustainable urban planning that balances development with the preservation of local identity.
