We’ll Take Any Reason to Head Back to Moonrise

After receiving a Michelin star, Moonrise has undergone a transformation that aligns its ambiance with the exceptional cuisine crafted by Chef Solemann Haddad. Having dined here for the first time in 2022 and returning in 2023 for menu updates, we were eager to revisit once again to explore the newly revamped space and savor Chef Haddad’s consistently captivating offerings.

The Spot

Nestled atop Satwa’s modern Eden House, Moonrise features an intimate 12-seat chef’s counter, granting every diner a close-up view of the culinary action. Following its Michelin star achievement, the venue was redesigned to ensure that the atmosphere complements the cuisine, as Chef Solemann Haddad explains. Guests are arranged on one side of the bar while the cooking team works just across, creating a warm community feel akin to a contemporary campfire gathering.

The Vibe

With an intimate and immersive setting, dining at Moonrise is an effortlessly relaxed experience. The limited seating creates a sense of participation as diners watch dishes being meticulously crafted right before their eyes. Sophisticated yet entirely unpretentious, the inviting layout and amiable staff foster an atmosphere more reminiscent of a cozy gathering among friends than a formal dining outing.

The Menu

Featuring a 12-course tasting menu, the offerings at Moonrise elevate comfort food with global influences and a distinctive local twist. Reflecting Dubai’s rich cultural tapestry, ingredients from the Middle East merge seamlessly with flavors from French, Japanese, Italian, and Latin American cuisines. As humorously noted on the menu, there’s a myriad of influences drawn from Chef Haddad’s own childhood experiences. Each dish bursts with bold tastes while narrating the chef’s upbringing in Dubai, culminating in a trio of imaginative desserts.

The Food and Drinks

Rather than a lengthy menu, guests are presented with a concise printout of the evening’s 12 courses. What may seem like a simple grilled cheese transforms into a heavenly delight: warm, oozy, expertly balanced, and unforgettable. The market prawn, coated with Syrian Aleppo chili and accompanied by the iconic toum, is utterly addictive, delivering a perfect burst of flavor with each bite. The Sarookh and Turbot dishes are nothing short of explosive, fulfilling every promise made by Chef Haddad. For beverage pairings, diners can choose from an all-star wine selection, Moonrise’s own pairings, mixed drinks, or delightful non-alcoholic options, precisely matched to enhance the flavors of each dish.

The Service

The charming team at Moonrise aims to keep the dining experience harmonious, although if you find yourself running a bit late (as we did), catching up can feel necessary. Fortunately, the dining pace remains comfortably unhurried, allowing you to savor each course at your leisure. The staff’s friendly demeanor fosters a sense of belonging, making you feel as if they are part of your gathering. Thoughtful details enhance the experience, like when they noticed my left-handed dining companion and discreetly adjusted her glass and utensils, a gesture that spoke volumes and personalized the evening beautifully.
