Celebrating Emirati Heritage
The Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council plays a pivotal role at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, emphasizing the significance of Emirati craftsmanship. According to H.E. Reem bint Karam, Director General of the Irthi Council, this inaugural participation is vital, as it celebrates an integral aspect of the national identity—hunting and equestrian pursuits. As she noted in a statement, the council’s involvement aligns with its mission to expand the realms of crafts within both local and international markets.
Empowering Artisans and Preserving Heritage
The Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council is dedicated to preserving and enhancing traditional crafts by merging them with modern designs. By empowering artisans through training and skill development, the council aims to strengthen the role of Emirati female crafters as key players in safeguarding heritage and fostering a diverse, sustainable economy. With a network that includes over 840 artisans, the council is committed to amplifying their creativity and craftsmanship.
Global Connections and Cultural Exchange
Through international partnerships, the Irthi Council bridges the gap between authentic Emirati crafts and their global counterparts, fostering knowledge exchange and creating sustainable markets for handcrafted products. This approach ensures that the rich cultural heritage of the UAE is preserved while being presented in a contemporary context that resonates with newer generations.
A Decade of Impact and Innovation
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, celebrating a decade filled with significant accomplishments in empowering female artisans. The council has established a comprehensive training and production system that spans 13 countries worldwide. Its remarkable achievements have transformed handicrafts from mere living tools into cultural symbols with artistic and economic value, reflecting the national identity while empowering community members, especially women.
Additionally, the council has successfully positioned crafts as a medium for cultural dialogue, forming strategic partnerships with esteemed global institutions, such as Bulgari and Cartier. Its advocacy culminated in UNESCO’s designation of Sharjah as a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art in 2019, recognizing its commitment to preserving one of the UAE’s oldest crafts, “Talli.”
The Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition serves as an innovative cultural platform that celebrates the rich Emirati identity. It features workshops and live demonstrations of arts and crafts inspired by the local heritage, expanding to include more than 15 sectors in its current edition. This comprehensive event is a vibrant hub for honoring heritage and showcasing authentic handcrafted products within an immersive cultural context.
