The UAE Calls for Iran‘s Suspension from the Human Rights Council
As part of ongoing efforts to defend human rights and enhance regional security, the Union Human Rights Association has called for the suspension of Iran’s membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council. This request is based on reports from a fact-finding mission that highlighted systematic institutional violations affecting several countries, particularly the United Arab Emirates. These serious demands reflect the urgent need for robust international action to address these violations and their implications for regional security and stability.
Human Rights in the Arab World
The Union Human Rights Association participated in the 61st session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, where it presented eight written statements and nine oral statements addressing significant human rights issues of both international and regional concern. In its interventions, the association focused on Iranian violations, linking them to armed attacks that constitute a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter, and called for international accountability to ensure the rights of affected civilians.
Countering Hate Speech
The association issued warnings about the dangers of inflammatory and misleading media discourse directed against the UAE, which contributes to escalating violence and undermines stability. It emphasized the necessity of developing international accountability standards, asserting that human rights should not be used as a tool for political intervention, particularly in the context of systematic digital campaigns against the state.
The UAE’s Role in Human Rights and Sustainable Development
The association highlighted the importance of the UAE’s experiences as effective models in promoting human rights, noting the country’s status as an attractive destination for labor and its provision of a work environment that supports social protection and equal opportunities. It reaffirmed the state’s efforts to enhance the protection of children in the digital space through the issuance of Federal Decree-Law No. 26 of 2025, which provides a comprehensive legal framework to ensure their safety.
Achieving Sustainable Development
The association also addressed the UAE’s role as a model in the relationship between combating financial crimes and human rights, through national strategies focused on prevention and capacity building. It drew attention to the country’s success in enhancing its global standing in climate action and sustainable development, including hosting the COP28 conference and its contributions to the loss and damage fund.
The interventions of the Union Human Rights Association during the 61st session reflect a strong stance calling for the enhancement of the credibility of human rights on the international stage. The association emphasized the importance of collective action to address increasing challenges, particularly in the areas of media incitement and transnational violations. Continuous interaction among various countries is vital for achieving security and stability in the region.
