During a significant visit to Kazakhstan, Suhail Mohamed Faris Al Mazrouei, the UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, led a delegation focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation across several vital sectors. The trip included stops in the cities of Almaty and Astana, where key high-level meetings were held to discuss collaborative efforts between the UAE and Kazakhstan.

Al Mazrouei’s visit kicked off with his participation in the 30th Kazakhstan International Oil and Gas Exhibition and Conference (KIOGE 2026), held in Almaty from September 30 to October 2. The event witnessed the participation of over 500 companies hailing from 30 countries, showcasing major players from the oil and gas sectors. This exhibition stands out as one of Central Asia’s pivotal events, highlighting cutting-edge technologies and equipment used in oil extraction, processing, exploration, logistics, safety, and artificial intelligence solutions in the energy sector.

Adapting to Future Developments

During the visit, Al Mazrouei took part in a roundtable discussion centred on “Energy Policy and International Cooperation.” Here, he articulated the crucial need for international collaboration and joint efforts in the energy sector, emphasising the importance of adaptability to rapid regional changes and the sustainability and security of energy supplies.

Alongside this, Al Mazrouei met with Yerlan Akbarov, Deputy Minister of Energy in Kazakhstan, where they explored various topics of mutual interest, primarily focusing on enhancing energy connectivity and integration between the two nations.

Tri-Partite Memorandum of Understanding

In a further development from his diplomatic engagements, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed among the UAE, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan to facilitate collaboration on the Central Asia-South Asia railway project. The signing event was attended by Janibek Jumayevich Taiganov, Acting Minister of Transport of Kazakhstan, and Ilham Rustamovich Makhkamov, Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan. This agreement aims to bolster railway connectivity between Central Asia and South Asia, enhance transportation networks, support trade flows, and promote regional integration, highlighting the critical role of transportation infrastructure in economic development.

Al Mazrouei also participated in a roundtable focused on “Investments and Joint Ventures between the Two Countries,” hosted by Renat Biktorov, Governor of the Astana Financial Centre. The meeting brought together representatives from various government and private sector institutions, including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Energy and Infrastructure, and Trade, along with several key UAE corporations such as the Union Water and Electricity Company, Union Railways, and Masdar, among others. The discussions addressed current collaborative projects and ways to enhance bilateral investments while exploring new opportunities in priority sectors.

Boosting Investments

Sessions during the visit also included the inauguration of the first artificial intelligence-focused university in Central Asia, the Kazakhstan University of Artificial Intelligence, which was opened by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kazakhstan. This initiative represents a growing cooperation between the UAE and Kazakhstan in education, technology, innovation, and developing national competencies, with a focus on preparing citizens for the future job market and knowledge-based economy.

Al Mazrouei concluded his visit with a meeting with Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, attended by Mansour Al Mansouri, Chairman of the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi, and CEO of G42, along with Dr. Mohamed Saeed Al-Ariqi, UAE Ambassador to Kazakhstan. During this meeting, he conveyed the greetings of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and other Emirati leaders, extending best wishes for progress and prosperity to Kazakhstan and its people.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The discussions between the leaders covered the strengths of the UAE-Kazakhstan relationship and opportunities for further development across various areas of mutual concern. This included exploring infrastructure and transportation projects, jointly developing the Middle Corridor, and enhancing cooperation in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.

Both parties acknowledged the importance of continuing collaborative efforts to advance quality projects and enhance reciprocal investments, driving sustainable development and economic integration. President Tokayev notably praised the ongoing collaboration in high-performance computing infrastructure with the UAE’s ‘Brighter’ initiative, affirming the need to continue advancing cooperation in advanced technology and artificial intelligence to meet the aspirations of both countries.

Al Mazrouei’s visit serves as a testament to the robust and evolving relations between the UAE and Kazakhstan, underlining a commitment to expanding cooperation across key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, transport, investment, technology, and artificial intelligence. The visit encapsulates both countries’ drive to enhance their strategic partnership and investment ventures, furthering joint initiatives that align with shared goals and promote economic and developmental integration within the region.
