His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, witnessed the launch of the Sharjah Sat 2 satellite, an achievement that enhances the UAE’s position in the field of space and advanced technology. This collaboration between academic and research institutions aims to implement pioneering projects that reflect the UAE’s commitment to developing its capabilities in space sciences.

On Monday evening, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, attended the event at the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Center, where the launch of the cube satellite “Sharjah Sat 2” was broadcast via satellite from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. He congratulated His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, on this historic achievement.

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi emphasized that “Sharjah Sat 2” represents a new step in the emirate’s journey in the field of space sciences, as the project helps refine the skills of Emirati engineers. He explained that the project aligns with the ambitious vision of the Ruler of Sharjah, aimed at empowering national talents and stimulating scientific research in advanced technology fields.

Integrated Efforts and Sustainable Projects

Dr. Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Director of the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Center, clarified that “Sharjah Sat 2” is part of a comprehensive scientific program designed to equip students and researchers with practical experiences in the design and operation of satellites. He stated that this success embodies the joint efforts of academic and scientific institutions in the country to develop the space sector and enhance the UAE’s presence on the international stage.

Technical Details and Journey to Space

Engineer Amal Al Hammadi provided a detailed explanation of the features of the “Sharjah Sat 2” satellite, confirming that it will operate in a low orbit at an altitude of approximately 500 kilometers. The satellite will undergo a three-month testing phase following its launch, followed by the actual operational phase, which will contribute to data collection and analysis. The satellite is designed to provide accurate information in various fields such as urban planning and environmental studies.

Performance and Advanced Technologies

The “Sharjah Sat 2” project includes five subsystems, comprising the power system, communication system, and control system. Additionally, the satellite is equipped with an advanced camera that operates using hyperspectral imaging technology, allowing it to monitor and identify subtle changes in the urban and natural environment. Thus, the project contributes to enhancing strategic planning for the Emirate of Sharjah and serves as a launching point for more innovative projects in the future.
