In an exciting cultural initiative, the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in collaboration with the Kalba Municipality, is set to kick off the inaugural edition of the “Kalba Festival for Al-Jashi and Al-Sahnah”. Scheduled to run from 24 to 27 September, this festival aims to celebrate the rich maritime heritage of the United Arab Emirates and enhance the sustainability of traditional food industries.

A Showcase of Traditional Maritime Heritage

The festival will feature ample participation from various government entities, specialised fishing companies, and local families, highlighting the community’s commitment to preserving maritime traditions. Key participants include the Sharjah Fisheries Authority, the Sharjah Museums Authority (Maritime Museum), the Sharjah International Marine Club, the Environment and Natural Reserves Authority, the Sharjah Heritage Institute, and the Kalba Fishermen’s Association. This collaboration will create direct sales platforms for local products and foster business partnerships that support growth within the region.

Engaging Workshops and Cultural Activities

Families will play an integral role at the festival, showcasing their innovative products inspired by the maritime heritage, allowing visitors to experience and purchase distinctive varieties of Al-Jashi and Al-Sahnah prepared with traditional recipes. As stated by Mohammed Ahmed Amin Al Awadhi, Director General of the Sharjah Chamber, this initiative not only aims to promote coastal food industries but also seeks to energise the commercial movement in Kalba, targeting both community members and tourists alike.

A Commitment to Economic and Cultural Sustainability

Dr. Ahmed Saeed Al Mazrouei, Director of Kalba Municipality, emphasised the team’s commitment to quality in the preparations for the festival, aiming to provide a welcoming environment for all community members and tourists. The festival’s location near the Kalba Disabled Club underlines the inclusive approach taken to involve diverse community segments in cultural events and to empower local families by enhancing their marketing capabilities.

Interactive Programs and Competitions

The festival will host a range of engaging competitions, educational workshops, and awareness-raising activities centred around sustainable fishing practices. These events will not only introduce visitors to the stages of catching and drying fish but also detail traditional preparation methods for Al-Sahnah using authentic spices. Moreover, there will be dedicated areas for showcasing the latest fishing technologies and products from local families.

Overall, the “Kalba Festival for Al-Jashi and Al-Sahnah” is poised to be a landmark event fostering cultural pride and economic opportunity, ensuring that the time-honoured practices of the fishing community are not just preserved but celebrated and integrated into the contemporary market landscape.
