Significant Achievements of the Zayed Center for Rare Disease Research in London

On the sixth anniversary of its establishment, the Zayed Center for Rare Disease Research in London has achieved remarkable milestones worthy of recognition, collaborating with Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London. This center has established itself as an important reference in the research and treatment of children with rare and complex diseases, focusing on recent advancements in gene therapy and cell treatment. The center has become a model for guiding global research towards improving the lives of these children and their families.

New Estimates and Reports

The Zayed Center for Rare Disease Research celebrated the launch of its annual impact report for 2024-2025, highlighting notable progress in gene and cell therapy. Since its founding in 2019, the center has attracted prominent scientists and physicians from around the world, serving as a platform to accelerate the discovery of diseases and necessary treatments. Dr. Maha Barakat, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Medical and Life Sciences, stated, “The Zayed Research Center continues to embody the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, as represented by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.”

Notable Medical Achievements

The Zayed Center for Rare Disease Research has recorded significant achievements over the past year, including the utilization of modern HiP-CT technology, which provides unprecedented imaging of children’s hearts. The center’s efforts have also expedited the diagnosis of children with epilepsy and developed research to assist in miniaturized organ transplantation in the laboratory. These achievements reflect the center’s commitment to addressing the complex challenges faced by newborns with serious conditions.

Strategic Partnerships

This year, the center has formed new partnerships aimed at addressing the shortage of viral vectors, essential for developing gene therapies. The center currently supports 93 projects with external funding exceeding £41 million, covering gene therapy, stem cells, and tissue engineering. Louise Parks, CEO of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, added, “The success of this globally leading partnership contributes to making transformative changes in the lives of children.”

Community Initiatives and Engagement

Another dimension of the center is its engagement with the local community. The center has collaborated with prestigious institutions in the UAE and partnered with the “Kalimati” Foundation, which launched the “Adopt a Library” initiative, resulting in the provision of a mobile library for children at Great Ormond Street Hospital. These initiatives are part of the center’s commitment to creating a supportive and educational environment for children despite their health challenges.

The significant achievements of the Zayed Center for Rare Disease Research represent a testament to the ongoing progress in research and treatment, positioning the center as a leader in supporting children with rare diseases worldwide and reflecting Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak’s dedication to advancing this field. As the center continues to focus on innovation and knowledge, it remains a symbol of hope for thousands of families globally.
