The UAE is embarking on an ambitious plan to reduce traffic congestion with a national project package worth 170 billion dirhams by 2030. This initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing transportation infrastructure, easing travel between the Emirates, and improving the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike. The strategic investment aims to tackle the pressing traffic issues the nation faces amid rapid urban growth and increasing vehicle ownership.
Groundbreaking Initiatives for Transportation Infrastructure
During a recent session titled “What are the Latest Updates on Traffic Congestion?” UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, unveiled a comprehensive suite of national projects targeting both federal and local transportation needs. The plan, which involves more than 170 billion dirhams in investment by 2030, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the efficiency of transportation systems across the emirates.
Al Mazrouei emphasized that these initiatives represent a holistic strategy for advancing transportation infrastructure. This includes expanding federal roads, upgrading public transportation systems, and implementing high-speed and light rail projects. These developments are crucial for accommodating population and economic growth while ensuring a better quality of life for both citizens and residents.
Strategic Framework for Traffic Management
Al Mazrouei noted that traffic congestion is a pivotal issue and a national priority for both federal and local authorities. Continuous efforts are being made to enhance infrastructure and improve public transit networks, making them more attractive and effective while reducing reliance on private vehicles. “The efforts come in line with the directives of our wise leadership, emphasizing the need to create a smart, flexible, and sustainable infrastructure that contributes to smooth traffic flow,” he stated.
To further bolster traffic flow, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure plans to increase the efficiency of federal roads by 73% over the next five years through a comprehensive development strategy. This will include raising the number of traffic lanes from 19 to 33 in each direction, which aims to significantly enhance road capacity and alleviate congestion.
Specific Projects Targeting Traffic Relief
Some of the key projects include expanding the Union Street capacity by 60% to accommodate twelve lanes, adding additional lanes in both directions. Similarly, the plan for Emirates Road envisions a 65% increase in capacity while reducing travel times by 45%. Furthermore, improvements on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road are set to increase its capacity by 45% to accommodate ten lanes.
The proposed construction of a fourth federal road, stretching 120 kilometers with a twelve-lane design, is projected to handle up to 360,000 trips daily, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency of the federal road network and supporting economic growth across the Emirates.
Addressing Traffic Causes and Future Developments
Al Mazrouei identified several factors contributing to traffic congestion, such as a significant rise in vehicle numbers, which are increasing at rates exceeding 8% annually compared to the global average of 2%. He highlighted the strong reliance on private vehicles and the close timing of shifts in workplaces and schools as major contributors to traffic delays. In response, the ministry is coordinating with local authorities to update policies aimed at managing traffic density and vehicle growth effectively.
To further encourage the use of public transportation, the department is exploring innovative solutions that integrate public transit with local road systems, thus making them more efficient and appealing. “We are implementing an integrated strategic approach to tackle traffic congestion and embrace innovative solutions and smart technologies to enhance traffic mobility,” noted Al Mazrouei.
Commitment to a Modern Transport Network
The UAE government continues to prioritize the transportation sector, especially railway development. The national railway program, launched in 2021 with an investment of 50 billion dirhams, reflects the nation’s vision for a cohesive transport system that strengthens connectivity between cities, reduces carbon emissions, and enhances road safety.
As these projects roll out, the UAE remains committed to delivering advanced and efficient transportation solutions that meet the evolving demands of its population while enhancing the quality of life for all its residents.
