Located in the heart of Dubai‘s Alserkal Avenue, bkry has quickly become a beloved hotspot, drawing customers not just for its freshly baked croissants and specialty coffee but also for its commitment to quality and sustainability. As demand continues to grow, overwhelming inquiries are prompting bkry to explore ambitious expansion plans that could further cement its position in the competitive culinary landscape of Dubai.
Since its launch in June 2024, bkry has captivated the local food scene, routinely attracting long lines of eager patrons and even garnering the attention of notable figures, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai.
“It was an incredible honor to welcome Sheikh Mohammed to bkry. His continuous support for local businesses and brands in the UAE is truly inspiring, and having him visit was a moment of pride for our entire team. It reaffirmed our commitment to delivering quality and pushing boundaries in the baking industry,” recalls Kameel Rasyid, the Indonesian co-founder and head pastry chef of bkry.
The surge in popularity has led Rasyid to consider opening multiple locations across the Emirates in response to bkry’s overwhelming demand. “In just a short span of time, bkry has grown from being a new name in Dubai’s culinary scene to becoming a recognized and celebrated destination for baked goods. The demand has been overwhelming, with long queues being a daily norm,” he said, revealing that expansion is definitely on the horizon.
While future growth is on the table, Rasyid emphasizes the importance of perfecting current operations. “We aim to keep evolving with new menu options and more,” he shared.
However, this high demand presents challenges for bkry as well. “One of the biggest challenges is meeting the high demand while maintaining the level of quality we are known for. Another challenge is constantly innovating and staying ahead in a competitive market, which requires a lot of research and creativity. We stay updated with industry trends by attending international food expos, networking with other chefs and suppliers, and closely monitoring customer preferences. Dubai’s food scene is dynamic, and being adaptable is key,” Rasyid explained.
What Does a Typical Day at bkry Look Like?
Every day before dawn, the bkry team begins its preparations. Rasyid notes that front-of-house staff ready themselves to serve customers eager to savor coffee from their sister brand, Archers, along with the bakery’s seasonal pastries.
The diverse clientele ranges from food enthusiasts and families to professionals and tourists. “Many of them appreciate the artistry behind what we do and our commitment to quality. To cater to their preferences, we keep our offerings dynamic and seasonal; this way, there is always something new to look forward to. We also focus on educating our customers about the ingredients and processes behind our products, which builds a deeper connection between them and our brand,” Rasyid elaborates.
Technology also enhances operational efficiency at bkry. A QR code system allows for contactless table payments, while a WhatsApp-based waiting list keeps customers informed about their wait times, sending notifications as tables become available. Rasyid emphasizes that bkry’s ethical approach extends to sourcing ingredients and reducing waste.
“We have been very particular when it comes to our ingredients. We work with several suppliers who practice ethical farming methods, ensuring that their farmers receive sustainable wages and support their local communities,” he shared. “Our vanilla comes from Indonesia, my home country, sourced through Adore Vanilla; our cacao beans are sourced from Kokoa Kamili in Tanzania; and our flour is from Wildfarmed in the UK. We seek the best ingredients that align with our brand ethos.” These premium ingredients are crucial for creating bkry’s signature offerings, such as the pecan salted caramel croissant and cinnamon roll.
What Makes bkry Stand Out in Dubai’s Competitive Food Scene?
Rasyid attributes the foundation of bkry to his personal journey of baking with his mother in Indonesia. “That dream has now turned into a reality where we can combine premium ingredients with innovation and sustainability,” he explained, noting that sustainability significantly contributes to bkry’s success.
As the baking sector in Dubai evolves toward greater diversity and sophistication, artisanal baking is witnessing increased demand. “Consumers are gravitating towards freshly-made, premium products crafted from scratch,” Rasyid observed, highlighting the growing importance of sustainability in the industry.
“We take pride in creating baked goods that are not just delicious but also responsibly made. Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we work with ethical suppliers locally and internationally to ensure our products have a positive impact,” he concluded.
