As part of an initiative to enhance biodiversity, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) collaborated with the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority to plant 600 new mangrove trees in the Jebel Ali Marine Reserve, with the participation of 239 volunteers. This event highlights DEWA’s commitment to rehabilitating coastal environments and achieving environmental sustainability goals.
Extensive Community Engagement
The event brought together 239 volunteers who contributed a total of 478 hours of volunteer work. Since February 2023, DEWA has successfully planted a total of 13,950 mangrove trees in the reserve, thanks to the efforts of nearly 1,900 individuals, including DEWA employees, their families, subsidiary staff, and students from the DEWA Academy.
Sustainability Initiatives
His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, commented: “As part of the national program ‘Planting the Emirates,’ launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, we are committed to achieving the goal of planting 100 million mangrove trees in the UAE by 2030. We aim to enhance biodiversity by expanding green spaces and encouraging the community to adopt agriculture and afforestation as a lifestyle.” Through these efforts, DEWA reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and supporting ecosystems.
A Sustainable Ambition
DEWA’s efforts to support biodiversity and restore mangrove forests are part of its broader strategy to achieve sustainable development. The authority collaborates with its strategic partners to protect and enhance the environment, including the conservation of native trees, particularly mangroves, to ensure their sustainability and implement nature-based solutions to combat climate change.
Encouraging Volunteerism
Participants praised the opportunities provided by DEWA to stimulate community engagement in environmental protection and the preservation of terrestrial and marine habitats. These initiatives contribute to raising environmental awareness among community members and encourage them to take positive steps towards change.
