Dubai Roads Authority Collaborates with Uber Technologies and WeRide to Launch Operational Trials for Autonomous Vehicles
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has signed an agreement with Uber Technologies and WeRide to commence operational trials for autonomous vehicles. This initiative aims to expand smart and innovative transportation solutions in Dubai, supporting the UAE’s aspirations for safe and sustainable mobility.
Operational Trials for Autonomous Vehicles
This agreement is part of the RTA’s efforts to implement autonomous vehicle technology. The trials will be managed by Uber in collaboration with WeRide, starting later this year, with a safety operator involved during the initial phase. The full commercial service is expected to launch by 2026.
Significance of the Agreement
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the RTA, expressed optimism about the agreement, stating that operating autonomous vehicles represents an important step toward the future of smart mobility. He added, “This initiative will contribute to achieving Dubai’s smart mobility strategy, which aims to convert 25% of total transport trips to autonomous trips by 2030.”
Expanding Global Partnerships
The RTA seeks to expand global partnerships in the field of smart transportation, with plans also including the development of aerial taxis and marine transport. In this context, Al Tayer believes these initiatives will enhance the quality of life in Dubai and contribute to improving traffic safety.
Collaboration with Global Companies
Frans Hemmstra from Uber noted that this agreement reflects their commitment to enhancing access to electric vehicles and advanced technology in the UAE. Jennifer Li from WeRide emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that the company is dedicated to accelerating the deployment of autonomous vehicles in the Middle East.
