An Unforgettable Culinary Experience at China Tang

Love Cantonese and Fine Dining? This New Gem Knows Exactly What It’s Doing

When it comes to Cantonese food, most of us think of comfort classics that evoke fond memories—silky dumplings, crispy spring rolls, and flavorful noodles from takeout boxes. But what happens when Cantonese cuisine is transformed into a fine dining experience? Enter China Tang, a stunning new addition at the Lana Promenade in Dubai. This restaurant embodies the legacy of the original London icon established by the late Sir David Tang, offering a refined and nostalgic take on Cantonese food that encourages a fresh perspective on this beloved culinary tradition.

The Story

China Tang isn’t your typical upscale restaurant; it stands as a legendary entity in its own right. The original China Tang at London’s Dorchester Hotel is celebrated for expertly showcasing traditional Cantonese cuisine along with remarkable service. Conceived by Sir David Tang, the restaurant marries the glamour of 1930s Shanghai with genuine Cantonese culinary heritage. Its Dubai location at the Lana Promenade overlooks Marasi Bay Marina, echoing the opulence of its London and Hong Kong counterparts while adding its unique narrative to this storied legacy.

The Space

Stepping into China Tang transports you to a bygone era, exuding the glamour of 1930s Shanghai. The interior boasts mirrored walls, art deco motifs, and lush velvet textures, all illuminated by soft, warm lighting that creates an inviting atmosphere. The vibrant yet cozy color palette is complemented by a breathtaking view—step out onto the terrace to enjoy the dazzling lights of Marasi Bay, a visual treat that enhances your dining experience.

The Presentation: Where Eyes Eat First

At China Tang, the dining experience begins long before the first bite. The tableware sets the stage for culinary artistry—hand-painted ceramics and elegant trays that elevate even the simplest dish. Dim sum arrives in bamboo steamers, each lid lifted to unveil a delicate masterpiece that is almost too beautiful to touch—though you undoubtedly will. Larger plates arrive on custom trays or carved platters, presenting your meal as if it were a work of art. Even the rice is styled to showcase its visual appeal.

The Food

This dining journey is rooted in tradition rather than fusion. The menu pays homage to beloved comfort dishes while elevating them through skillful techniques and top-quality ingredients. We started with the Foie Gras Cherries (Dhs198)—delicate bites enveloped in a glossy cherry glaze that offers a delightful sweetness. The Spinach with sesame and peanut dressing added a satisfying crunch (Dhs88). Not to be missed were the golden shrimp Har-Kau (Dhs88) and the Crispy Seafood Prawn Cheung-fan (Dhs68), which quickly became highlights. Other notable dishes included the vegetable spring rolls (Dhs78) and the signature Sir David’s Hot & Sour soup (Dhs88). For mains, we opted for the Crispy Shredded Beef (Dhs218) and Stir-fried Scallop & Asparagus (Dhs198), both of which impressed and satisfied our palate. To conclude our meal, we chose the Chilled Sichuan Jelly (Dhs78), presented tableside with an array of fruits and toppings, offering a light and refreshing end. The Chocolate and Jasmine Tea Cake (Dhs98) was equally delightful, perfectly balanced in flavors.

Verdict

China Tang redefines what Cantonese fine dining can be in Dubai—an iconic establishment that excels in both taste and ambiance. Whether you visit for the heritage or the exquisite dim sum, you won’t leave disappointed. We came for the food, reveled in the atmosphere, and undoubtedly plan to return for another unforgettable culinary experience.
