Abu Dhabi Ports has awarded a contract to Baku Shipyard for the construction of two new container ships, marking a strategic step aimed at enhancing trade relations across the Caspian Sea region. This initiative seeks to improve logistics services and meet the growing demand for container shipping. Through this contract, Abu Dhabi Ports aims to support trade and keep pace with global developments in the maritime transport sector.
Contract Details with Baku Shipyard
The contract was signed with the Azerbaijan Transport and Communications Holding, the general legal representative on behalf of Baku Shipyard. This partnership aims to enhance maritime connectivity and boost trade flow by designing ships that meet the increasing needs of the region. The two ships will be dedicated to operations in the Caspian Sea to ensure effective and sustainable transport solutions.

Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports Group, stated: “This step reaffirms our commitment at Abu Dhabi Ports Group to support and empower the growing trade in the Caspian Sea region.” He further added that the collaboration with Baku Shipyard aims to provide the highest international standards in terms of quality and efficiency, enabling them to increase capacity and enhance service reliability, thus supporting sustainable growth in supply chains.
Future Expectations
The delivery of the two ships is expected in the fourth quarter of 2027, to commence operations linking commercial hubs within the Caspian Sea region. This contract follows several projects undertaken by Abu Dhabi Ports Group in Central Asia, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of resource transport and meeting global demands.
New Initiatives in the Region
Last June, Abu Dhabi Ports Group announced the opening of the first phase of the Tbilisi Multimodal Center. This center is the first of its kind in Georgia, featuring a container terminal and customs warehouse area, and serves as a key connectivity point enhancing the group’s presence in Central Asia. The new center is connected to the railway network and is strategically located, linking the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea, making it an essential part of the trade corridor between Asia and Europe.
