Honoring the Legacy of Abu Dhabis Education Authority

In a significant move to promote the Arabic language, the دائرة التعليم والمعرفة بأبوظبي has announced a new initiative aimed at enhancing language skills among young learners. Beginning in the academic year 2025-2026, 240 minutes per week will be dedicated to teaching Arabic in kindergartens, with plans to increase this duration to 300 minutes by the following year. This initiative underscores the importance of embedding the Arabic language into the daily lives of children, ensuring its vitality and integration not only in classrooms but also in homes.

Reshaping Early Education

Last week, the دائرة التعليم والمعرفة بأبوظبي unveiled its plans to enrich early childhood education through the inclusion of more Arabic language instruction. The Executive Director for Early Education expressed a clear ambition: “To make Arabic an integral part of children’s daily experiences, alive and interactive in every classroom and home.” This approach is a response to the growing concern regarding children’s disconnect from the Arabic language, which poses risks to the community’s cultural identity.

The Importance of Language Skills

The education authority recognizes that many children today struggle with the fundamentals of their native language, including writing, spelling, and reading. This lack of proficiency could lead to a loss of connection with Arabic heritage. It’s essential that the upcoming generation not only masters the language but also has access to a wealth of knowledge in Arabic. Various studies suggest that mastering multiple languages can impact the learning of a child’s mother tongue, which underlines the need for a structured language development strategy.

Global Trends in Arabic Language Education

Interestingly, various nations have increasingly prioritized the teaching of Arabic for various reasons. For example, Turkey has made Arabic a compulsory subject in primary education, reflecting a desire to reconnect with historical texts and to facilitate communication in the tourism sector. Similarly, many Asian countries view Arabic language education as a means to strengthen economic relationships with the Arab world. This global shift highlights the growing recognition of Arabic’s significance in international contexts.

A Timeless Language

During a recent Arabic language conference, I was handed a handwritten note from an attendee that referenced a thought-provoking story by the French novelist Jules Verne. Verne’s fictional travelers, who ventured to the earth’s core, opted to leave a message written in Arabic, believing it to be the enduring language. When asked why he chose Arabic, Verne candidly remarked that it’s the language that will prevail until the Quran is no longer on earth. This anecdote resonated deeply with me and serves to highlight the lasting relevance of the Arabic language.

As we celebrate this initiative and express our gratitude to the دائرة التعليم والمعرفة بأبوظبي, we remain hopeful for its success and continued development across all educational stages to enhance language capabilities among learners.
