Emirates Global Aluminium Welcomes 140 Endangered Turtles
Emirates Global Aluminium has emphasized its commitment to environmental protection by welcoming 143 eggs from the endangered Hawksbill turtles. This initiative follows the monitoring of the company’s beach during the summer nesting season, reflecting its ongoing efforts to preserve wildlife. These unique species, considered critically endangered, represent biodiversity in the UAE and are an important symbol of our natural heritage.
Sustainable Efforts to Protect Turtles
Today, Emirates Global Aluminium announced the hatching of 143 eggs from the endangered Hawksbill turtles on the company’s Al Taweelah beach. Since the launch of its turtle protection programs and their natural habitats in 2011, the total number of turtles hatched near the company’s sites has risen to 7,643. The Hawksbill turtle is the only species that lays eggs on the shores of the UAE, highlighting the importance of the company’s efforts to conserve this species.
Nest Protection and Healthcare
During the nesting season, the company’s sustainability team monitors Al Taweelah beach to ensure the protection of turtle nests from predators and marine debris. Additionally, the team provides care for injured or sick turtles found on the beach. Since the turtle monitoring program began in 2011, 118 turtles have laid eggs on the beach adjacent to Emirates Global Aluminium’s plant in Al Taweelah, demonstrating the program’s success.
Rehabilitation of Sick Turtles
Earlier this year, Emirates Global Aluminium released seven sea turtles at Jebel Ali beach after treating and rehabilitating them in collaboration with the Jumeirah Group’s Turtle Rehabilitation Center. This initiative reflects the ongoing partnership to rescue injured turtles and return them to their natural habitat. One of these turtles was equipped with a satellite tracking device to monitor its journey at sea.
Conservation of Local Wildlife
Abdul Nasser Bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, stated: “We are committed at Emirates Global Aluminium to protecting the wildlife and biodiversity surrounding our operational sites, and we strive to provide a safe environment on our shores to ensure the return of Hawksbill turtles every year, as they are an important symbol of our natural heritage.”
Furthermore, Emirates Global Aluminium organizes annual beach clean-up campaigns at its Al Taweelah and Jebel Ali locations in support of local wildlife conservation efforts. Three beach clean-up events this year saw the participation of around 300 employees from various departments, resulting in the removal and responsible recycling of over four tons of waste in collaboration with certified waste management partners.
A female Hawksbill turtle typically lays between 100 to 150 eggs during the nesting season, underscoring the importance of conserving its habitat to ensure the survival of this endangered species. Emirates Global Aluminium’s efforts serve as a model for environmental protection and sustainability worldwide.
