Zayed International Airport: A Hub of Growth and Prosperity for Airlines
Zayed International Airport reaffirms its status as one of the fastest-growing airports in the Middle East, with a projected increase in scheduled seat capacity for airlines of up to 16.6% in the second half of this year. According to data from the international organization OAG, the demand for travel through the airport, located in the heart of Abu Dhabi, reflects the strength and prosperity of this vital aviation center.
Capacity and Expansion
Zayed International Airport, with a capacity of 45 million passengers annually, can accommodate up to 79 aircraft at one time. These features make it a promising departure point for airlines worldwide, allowing them to capitalize on the increasing demand. The UAE’s open skies policy provides airlines the opportunity to enhance their presence and expand their networks.
Expected Growth in Seat Capacity
Reports indicate that scheduled seat capacity at Zayed International Airport is expected to rise to approximately 10,274,000 seats during the second half of the year, compared to 8,897,000 seats in the same period last year. This growth is a clear indicator of how airlines are responding to increasing demand, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 14.8% by 2025.
New Expansions by Airline Partners
Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the UAE, has announced a strategic adjustment to increase its destinations, adding seven new routes to reach a total of 27 destinations by 2025. These new destinations include Almaty, Baku, and Bucharest. Antónioaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, stated, “Our goal is clear; we want to attract more travelers to direct flights to Abu Dhabi.” This expansion aligns with the airport’s ambition to remain a center of growth and prosperity for airlines.
Welcoming New Airlines and Achieving Record Numbers
Over the past year, eight new airlines have joined the network of Zayed International Airport, contributing to a 10% growth in air traffic. These airlines have enhanced the global connectivity of the emirate, with the number of flights through Abu Dhabi airports reaching 249,747 in 2024. The airport also achieved a significant milestone by welcoming the first direct flight connecting Shanghai and Abu Dhabi, adding valuable connectivity to its growing aviation network.
Overall, Zayed International Airport is truly a burgeoning and established center for innovation and growth in the aviation sector, attracting global airlines and passengers seeking exceptional travel experiences. This dynamic represents one of the most significant transformations in modern aviation.
