Travel Booking Installments: Don’t Overlook Fees and Benefits

As flexible payment options become increasingly popular in the travel sector, experts are sounding a warning about the potential pitfalls of “zero-interest” travel installment offers. With a surge in the availability of these schemes in the local market, professionals urge consumers to approach such offers with caution and a thorough understanding of the underlying costs.

The Hidden Costs of Travel Installments

Experts in the fields of travel and finance stress the importance of evaluating all financial obligations before booking a trip. Understanding the true cost of instalments goes beyond simply assessing whether interest is advertised; it also involves considering additional fees such as processing, delays, rescheduling, cancellation policies, and refund conditions. A sound financial decision begins with a comparison of the total amount payable, rather than focusing merely on the monthly instalment amount or the ease of financing.

Growing Popularity of Expense Installments

Banking expert Amjad Nasr highlights the increasing prevalence of installment plans for travel expenses, whether through travel agencies, finance companies, or attractive offers from banks on credit cards. While these options may provide payment flexibility, the abundance of choices can lead consumers to make spending decisions without adequately assessing their impact on monthly budgets.

Nasr points out, “The core problem lies in the absence of proper financial planning and the lack of awareness regarding prioritising financial responsibilities. When individuals accumulate installment commitments from multiple sources, they risk diverting an ever-increasing portion of their monthly income to service previous obligations.” The situation can become particularly precarious during unemployment, retirement, or any circumstance that interrupts income, leaving individuals burdened with ongoing financial commitments without sufficient savings to cover essential expenses.

Understanding ‘Zero-Interest’ Offers

Furthermore, Nasr stresses that so-called zero-interest installment plans may not be as cost-free as they appear. Providers could benefit from fees charged to merchants or financial arrangements with financing entities. Moreover, banks might collect transaction fees from merchants during credit card usage, necessitating a comprehensive assessment of actual costs and future liabilities rather than taking the term “zero-interest” at face value. “Instalments can be beneficial when used mindfully, but they should not become a means of funding a lifestyle that exceeds one’s genuine spending capacity,” he cautions.

Market Demand for Instalment Plans

Badr Ahli, Executive Director of Dubai Global Travel Company, confirms the growing demand for installment plans within the local travel market. As more consumers seek flexible options to book flights and accommodations, Ahli notes that travel has come to reflect a significant lifestyle choice rather than merely an annual holiday. “These payment plans allow travelers to distribute the cost of a trip over time,” he explains.

Nonetheless, Ahli warns that the flexibility of booking on installment does not automatically translate to the least expensive option. It is crucial for consumers to familiarise themselves with cancellation and modification policies before finalising any bookings, as well as any potential charges that may result from changing travel dates or cancelling trips.

Critical Considerations

Ahli highlights that the risks associated with installment payments are exacerbated for those who fail to pre-plan their budgets or base their travel decisions solely on their capacity to make a monthly payment. They often overlook total trip costs and other financial obligations during the repayment period. “Consumers should view instalments as a means of structuring payments rather than an unlimited expansion of purchasing power,” he advises.

Understanding the Market for Travel Installments

Banking professional Essa Abdulrahman Al Ali points out that the increase in travel installment products is a response to heightened demand for flexible payment solutions. However, he emphasises that these offers are not entirely devoid of costs, as processing fees of 1% or more may be incorporated based on the duration of the instalment. “Individuals should be vigilant about understanding their total financial obligations, comparing fees across banks, and ensuring there are no hidden charges, such as late fees or rescheduling costs,” he notes.

Al Ali attributes the proliferation of these products to consumers’ desires for reduced financial strain while travelling, alongside rising trip costs, and fierce competition among banks and financing companies to attract younger consumers and families. He adds, “Generally, these products can be beneficial for those who manage their financial commitments wisely, but they may become burdensome if used recklessly or in combination with multiple financial obligations.”

Four Ways to Consider Travel Installments in the UAE

A recent survey of travel installment products available in the UAE reveals various options allowing travellers to spread the costs of trips across multiple payments. These include quarterly instalments, monthly payments via credit cards, and extended repayment plans for certain bookings.

Published terms for travel offers indicate that processing fees vary by bank and repayment duration. For one travel-related offer, processing costs are outlined as follows: 1% for three-month instalments, 2% for six months, 3% for nine months, and 4% for twelve months, with a minimum transaction threshold of 1,000 AED.

Instalments on Four Installments

Some payment services allow the division of flight booking costs into four equal instalments or more, depending on available plans. In one published option, the minimum transaction begins at 400 AED, exclusively for UAE citizens and residents, with administrative fees added to the overall booking cost. Verifying identity and meeting specific approval criteria may also be required for the transaction.

Bank Payment Plans Over Several Months

Selected banking offers permit the division of flight ticket costs into monthly payments, typically starting from a minimum eligible booking of 1,000 AED. These options are generally linked to possessing a qualifying credit card and meeting the bank’s stipulations. Some plans impose no processing fees, while others do charge a fixed fee or a percentage of the transaction value.

Combination Installment Options

Certain payment options enable complete travel bookings, though standards regarding the acceptance of combined flight and hotel reservations in a single plan are not uniform. Conditions vary by booking provider, service type, transaction value, and payment provider’s rules. Prior to finalising bookings, it is essential to confirm whether the instalment plan covers the entire package or only part of it, as well as whether processing fees apply to the total booking and the cancellation and refund policies.

Extended Monthly Payment Plans

Numerous banks offer the opportunity to convert qualifying credit card purchases into more extended repayment plans. One publication states that minimum transactions can start from 750 AED, with standard repayment periods ranging from 12 to 48 months, contingent upon making the transfer within the designated time window and adhering to card conditions.

In summary, understanding the true cost of instalments encompasses processing fees, rescheduling, cancellation conditions, and refund policies.
