UN Crime Prevention Conference Shapes Global Justice Agenda

The United Nations Conference on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice is making significant strides towards shaping an international justice agenda, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) taking the lead. This initiative, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, reflects a steadfast commitment to safety, security, and the rule of law, as emphasized by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence.

UAE’s Commitment to Justice and Security

During his visit to the accompanying exhibition of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Nahyan highlighted the UAE’s pioneering model in enhancing security indicators, reinforcing legal systems, and developing judicial frameworks. He noted that the nation’s wise leadership upholds human dignity, safety, and welfare as national priorities, thereby bolstering advanced judicial systems that can adapt to global changes and responsibly leverage modern technologies to protect rights and maintain community stability.

International Collaboration and Innovations

At the conference, which features participation from representatives of over 97 countries, Sheikh Nahyan explored various initiatives and solutions focused on crime prevention, judicial system enhancement, victim protection, and the enforcement of law. He visited the Ministry of Justice’s pavilion, where he learned about the UAE’s integrated and modern judicial system, along with several AI-supported solutions aimed at improving access to justice.

Strengthening Partnerships Against Drug Trafficking

In a related event, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad Al Nahyan, Chairman of the National Anti-Narcotics Agency, oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the UAE agency and Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. This agreement aims to bolster cooperation in combating drug production, trafficking, and manufacturing, marking a new phase of joint security efforts between the two nations against this transnational threat.

Key Discussions on Global Issues

The conference’s third day concluded with international discussions on empowering women, protecting youth, safeguarding sports integrity, and combating human trafficking across global supply chains. Additionally, there was a strong focus on enhancing African coordination to address the nexus between crime and terrorism, alongside developing evidence-based strategies to prevent crime and harness the capabilities of data and artificial intelligence for risk mitigation.

Innovative Strategies and Workshops

Continuing the high-level segments, the conference featured workshops including one titled “Proactive Challenges: Enhancing Data Collection and Analysis to Better Protect People and the Planet Against New and Emerging Forms of Crime.” These discussions also involved Minister of Justice Abdullah Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, who engaged in bilateral talks with representatives from Bangladesh, Canada, Kazakhstan, India, and the United Kingdom, exploring avenues to deepen legal and judicial partnerships.

Addressing Financial Crimes and New Risks

Moreover, the UAE’s National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing announced the launch of the third round of the national risk assessment involving 84 specialized entities and the private sector. This assessment seeks to strengthen the understanding of national risks and priorities in combating financial crimes, ensuring effective policies and measures are in place.

Confronting Cyber Fraud in the AI Era

On a parallel track, the Ministry of Interior hosted a high-level event titled “No Victim Without an Identity, No Crime Without Pursuit: Confronting Cyber Fraud in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” This event attracted key figures from relevant international bodies, including Monica Juma, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, and Dr. Kongkresada Kitthideravong, Executive Director of ASEANAPOL, who shared insights on collaborative approaches to tackling emerging challenges in crime prevention.

As the conference unfolds, it continues to forge a robust international agenda dedicated to justice and safety, underlining the UAE’s pivotal role in fostering global security partnerships.
