Significant snowfall and the threat of avalanches have forced many climbers to abandon their plans to ascend Mount Manaslu in Nepal, according to the organisations managing these expeditions. The adverse weather conditions have led to the cancellation of almost all climbing trips this year.
Severe Weather Conditions Prompt Cancellations
A total of around 480 climbers had intended to make the ascent during this autumn season. However, as heavy snowfall continued and the risk of landslides increased, climbers were advised to retreat. The Nepalese Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy rain across the country for the next four days, further complicating the situation.
Guided Escapes to Safety
Chang Dawa Sherpa from Seven Summit Treks informed AFP that the weather has made climbing impossible this year. Meanwhile, Mingma G. Sherpa from Imagine Nepal reported that their clients would begin leaving the base camp of Manaslu on Thursday. “Our teams will work to ensure their safe transport to the valley by tomorrow morning,” he stated.
A Rare Weather Phenomenon
Climbers have taken to social media to express their astonishment, noting that conditions at Manaslu are unprecedented in recent years. Additionally, it has been reported that four climbers lost their lives during this climbing season on the slopes of the mountain, highlighting the dangers associated with such extreme weather.
Autumn Climbing Season Challenges
The autumn climbing season sees significantly fewer climbers attempting to scale the Himalayan peaks compared to the spring season, mainly due to harsher cold and snow conditions. Nepal is home to eight of the world’s highest 14 peaks, all exceeding 8,000 metres in height, making it a notable destination for mountaineers from around the globe.
