Dubai Ranks First in the Region for Budget Solo Travelers

In a recent analysis by “Travel Supermarket,” Dubai has emerged as a leader in affordable travel for solo adventurers, ranking first in the Middle East and fourth globally for the least increase in holiday costs for single travellers. This report underscores the limited disparity in travel expenses between individuals journeying alone and those accompanied by others.

The study reveals that a week’s holiday in Dubai for a solo traveller costs approximately $2,463, whereas the rate drops to around $1,875 per person when shared between two people, creating a difference of $588 or 31.4%. This significant finding highlights Dubai’s competitive pricing for solo trips in comparison to many other destinations.

Understanding the ‘Solo Travel Tax’

The term “solo travel tax” describes the added financial burden that a lone traveller faces compared to those travelling in pairs, primarily driven by accommodation costs that can be shared. The findings position Dubai among the five global destinations with the lowest rates of this ‘tax.’

Leading the lowest ‘solo travel tax’ category is Koh Lanta in Thailand, where a week for solo travellers costs about $1,865, compared to $1,539 for those travelling in pairs, resulting in a 21.4% difference of around $327. Phuket ranks second, with solo trips priced at $2,621, contrasted with $2,136 for a shared room, giving a 23% increase. Bulgaria’s Burgas comes in third with costs of $1,035 for solo travellers versus $793 for two, and Athens follows closely, registering a difference of 32.7% between solo costs of $1,697 and $1,277 when shared.

Comparative Cost Differences

Conversely, the analysis also highlights stark cost differences in various well-known tourist locations. Barcelona is cited as having the highest ‘solo travel tax’ among those examined, recording an 84% disparity, where solo travellers incur costs of $2,444 versus $1,333 for shared travel. Corfu in Greece follows as the second highest, costing solo travellers $2,248 compared to $1,240 for mutual lodging, reflecting an 81% difference. Ibiza, New York, and Marrakech round out the list of locations with significant cost surges for solo travellers, showcasing disparities upwards of 70%.

Growing Trend in Solo Travel

This analysis arrives alongside a notable surge in interest in solo travel globally, with the number of flights taken by solo travellers soaring by 89% over the past decade. This trend is particularly pronounced among women, who are increasingly seeking experiences tailored to individual travel preferences.

The insights provided by “Travel Supermarket” are based on comparing the average cost of a seven-night holiday for a single adult with the average cost of a room shared between two, thereby establishing a clear understanding of the financial variances associated with these travel choices.
