UAE’s Renewable Energy Production Surges 63-Fold in a Decade

As the world continues to push for more sustainable energy solutions, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made remarkable strides in its renewable energy sector over the past decade. With a vision aimed at establishing a secure and sustainable energy framework, the UAE has significantly expanded its renewable energy capacity, achieving a remarkable increase of over 63 times since 2015.

Significant Growth in Renewable Energy Capacity

According to Engineer Shereef Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, the UAE’s renewable energy production capacity soared from 129 megawatts in 2015 to over 8.2 gigawatts in 2025. This surge has placed clean energy’s contribution to the country’s electricity generation at an impressive 32.4%, with aspirations to increase this figure to 35% by 2031.

Advancements in National Electricity Infrastructure

The substantial growth in renewable energy has been complemented by the continuous enhancement of the national electricity grid. In 2025, the total electricity generated in the UAE reached 192,735 gigawatt-hours, with consumption figures at 174,524 gigawatt-hours. The advancements not only reflect an increasing reliance on clean energy sources but also demonstrate the UAE’s careful planning to meet future energy demands through collaborative efforts across federal, local, and private sectors.

Diverse Energy Sources and Integration

The UAE’s approach encompasses a variety of clean energy sources, including nuclear energy, photovoltaic and concentrated solar power, wind energy, and energy conversion from waste. For instance, more than 62.4 gigawatt-hours of electricity were produced from renewable sources in 2025 alone, signalling a diversified and robust energy mix.

Commitment to Sustainability and International Collaboration

In 2025, the UAE was ranked third globally in terms of access to electricity, its quality, and reliability, while second in energy transition metrics and solar energy consumption per capita. As part of its international efforts, the UAE has signed a memorandum of understanding with India to enhance electricity interconnection, reinforcing its commitment to collaborative energy projects.

Recognition and Future Goals

The progress made in the energy sector has not gone unnoticed; the UAE’s projects and policies have earned various local and international accolades for innovations in clean energy and sustainability. Notably, the unified energy data platform was awarded the best project in e-science at the World Summit on the Information Society, showcasing the country’s dedication to utilising modern technologies in energy management.

Ongoing Development and Future Outlook

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is determined to further develop the national energy framework, enhance its efficiency, and bolster its readiness. These efforts are essential not only for ensuring energy security but also for supporting the anticipated economic and demographic growth while aligning with national objectives in clean energy sustainability and climate neutrality.
