The UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has confirmed that markets across the country are free from lettuce products linked to the outbreak of Cyclosporiasis. The ministry is actively coordinating with health and regulatory bodies to monitor and inspect shipments entering the country.

Monitoring and Safety Measures in Place

In a recent tweet shared on the platform “X”, the ministry stated it continues to track international alerts and monitor investigations into potential contamination sources for fresh produce, particularly lettuce sourced from Central Mexico. Collaboration with regulatory agencies is ongoing to ensure the safety of food items available in the markets, alongside the implementation of preventive measures to uphold the highest safety standards.

Public Safety Recommendations

The ministry has urged the community to adhere to healthy practices, such as thoroughly washing fresh fruits and vegetables prior to consumption and purchasing from licensed outlets. These actions play a crucial role in enhancing food safety and public health.

Background on the Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Recently, fresh lettuce has been associated with a widespread outbreak of Cyclosporiasis across several states in the United States. This illness is caused by a microscopic parasite called Cyclospora cayetanensis, which contaminates agricultural products via irrigation or washing water and does not spread directly from person to person. Instead, it is transmitted through contaminated food or water and affects the small intestine, leading to gastrointestinal disruptions. Symptoms include severe watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss, typically appearing about a week after consuming contaminated food.

Just days ago, Michigan reported two fatalities associated with Cyclosporiasis infections, with testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linking the outbreak, which has affected nine states, to a type of lettuce imported from Taylor Farms in Central Mexico. However, authorities continue to investigate alternative potential sources.
