Acting on the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE has moved quickly to provide relief to those affected by recent floods in the friendly Republic of Ghana, through the UAE Aid Agency.
The emergency response comes as part of the UAE’s long-standing approach of extending a helping hand to countries and peoples facing natural disasters and humanitarian crises. The floods have affected 131,825 people from 21,367 families, displaced 38,651 people and caused 45 deaths, in addition to widespread damage to homes and infrastructure.
UAE response to the disaster
Dr Tariq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, highlighted the leading global role played by the UAE in providing swift relief support and humanitarian solidarity in such difficult and urgent circumstances, through the implementation of relief programmes and immediate humanitarian response following natural disasters and heavy rainfall, as seen in the friendly Republic of Ghana over recent days.
He noted the UAE’s efforts to assist those affected by the Ghana floods by delivering urgent relief supplies, including essential food items and necessary shelter materials, as well as supporting the Ghanaian government’s national efforts to deal with the impact of the natural disaster.
Coordination with local partners
Dr Al Ameri explained that the UAE Aid Agency’s teams are coordinating with local partners in Ghana to ensure that relief assistance reaches the most affected and most needy families, and to provide all forms of humanitarian support and essential supplies of food and shelter.
He said this would help ensure a rapid early recovery and restore stability.
UAE solidarity with Ghana
The UAE has expressed its solidarity with the friendly Republic of Ghana following the victims of the floods caused by heavy rainfall, which led to deaths and injuries and caused severe damage. It also conveyed its sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims, and to the government and people of Ghana, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
