UAE and India Forge Historic Tax Transparency Agreement

In a rapidly evolving business landscape, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India are forging a path toward a more transparent and sustainable tax framework. Recent developments in their tax systems reflect a shift towards enhanced economic transparency, bolstering business environments and attracting investments. Experts in taxation and accounting have highlighted the significance of streamlining tax structures in this regard, as showcased during the conference “Taxes 360 Degrees – Exploring Tax Horizons in India and the UAE and International Taxation,” organized by the Dubai branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), which saw participation from over 300 professionals.

Tax Reforms as Economic Cornerstones

During the conference, Abdulla Qadir Obaid Ali, President of the Internal Auditors Association in the UAE, emphasized that the ongoing tax reform represents a qualitative shift in the national economy. He pointed out that the introduction of the tax system enhances transparency, governance, and integrity standards within the business environment. “Taxes are no longer merely financial tools; they have become essential elements in defining the identity of the economy and the quality of the investment climate,” he asserted, highlighting the long-term appeal of the UAE market.

Emphasizing the Role of Accountants

Obaid Ali also noted the increasing importance of accountants in the global economy. “A significant portion of Fortune 500 companies are managed by accounting specialists,” he remarked, underlining the profession’s vital role in sustaining business stability, especially amid growing reliance on modern technologies and artificial intelligence.

India’s Tax System Transformation

In a related perspective, Rishi Shaula, head of the Dubai branch of ICAI, pointed out the increasing convergence between the tax systems of India and the UAE, driven by mutual goals of simplification, digital transformation, and transparency. He elaborated that India’s tax system is undergoing a radical transformation focusing on facilitation rather than complication, with a rising dependence on digital solutions that enhance tax compliance efficiency and support economic growth.

Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations

Data shared during the conference revealed a noteworthy improvement in India’s tax revenues, with over 91.9 million individuals paying income tax. Additionally, personal tax collections have surpassed corporate tax revenues, signifying an expanding tax compliance base. Dr. Dharm Singh Meena, First Secretary in the Internal Revenue Department of the Indian Embassy in the UAE, highlighted the growing economic ties between the two nations, stating that bilateral trade has exceeded $100 billion. He noted that the new tax reforms in India, anticipated to take effect by 2025, mark a pivotal phase in simplifying the tax system by significantly reducing administrative complexities, thereby enhancing compliance and minimizing disputes.

Digital Transformation and the Future of Taxation

In terms of digital transformation, participants stressed that adopting artificial intelligence in financial and tax operations has become a strategic necessity for companies, not merely an option, given the rapid changes in the global business environment. The conference concluded with a strong affirmation of the ICAI’s pivotal role as the world’s largest professional body of accountants, underscoring the Dubai branch’s importance in supporting the UAE’s accounting community through a robust network of expertise that fosters business development and competitiveness.
