UAE Implements Social Media Regulations for Minors Under 15

The United Arab Emirates has officially implemented a ban on social media platforms for children under 15 years old, becoming the first Arab nation to take such a step following similar actions in countries like Australia, the UK, and Canada. This significant decision was made by the UAE Cabinet, aimed at safeguarding young users amid growing concerns regarding their online safety and the associated risks of digital interactions.

New Regulations for Social Media Use

The Cabinet’s decision mandates social media platforms operating within the UAE to monitor and identify accounts belonging to children under 15 that violate the new regulations. The platforms have been given a 12-month grace period to comply and are required to implement reliable age verification mechanisms. The objective is to prevent unauthorized access and to protect minors from potential online dangers.

Restrictions on Underage Account Use

According to the ruling, it is prohibited for children under the age of 15 to create, use, or manage personal accounts on social media platforms. Full access to platform features—including social interactions, posting, commenting, joining public groups, or engaging in vast interactive spaces—is restricted for this age group. Children between the ages of 15 and 16 are allowed to use these platforms but under strict conditions that include specialized safety measures.

Implementing Safety Measures

For teenagers aged 15 and 16, their accounts must adhere to protective measures such as content categorization and restriction based on age groups. High-risk features will be disabled, and usage duration will be regulated. Parental control tools will also be made available to help caregivers manage their children’s online presence in accordance with the ruling. Importantly, parental consent is not considered a valid reason to bypass these prohibitions or restrictions.

Regional Trends and Future Considerations

This decision aligns with a growing trend globally, as countries like Australia recently enacted a pioneering ban on social media for users under 16. Other nations, including the UK, have followed suit, demonstrating a collective recognition of the challenges faced by minors in the digital landscape. While several countries in Asia and Europe are tightening regulations around teenage social media usage, action remains limited in the Arab region. For instance, Egypt’s parliament is considering new legislation to regulate children’s online engagements, reflecting an increased commitment to digital safety.

With the UAE setting a precedent in the Arab world regarding the prohibition of social media platforms for children under 15 years old, it underscores the urgent need for a collective response to the challenges posed by the digital age. The decision signals a proactive approach in addressing the complexities of online safety for young users, paving the way for similar initiatives across the region.
