Deir ez-Zor Residents Struggle with Inadequate Ferry Services

The Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria is facing a significant transportation crisis across the Euphrates River due to the lack of usable bridges. Residents rely entirely on river ferries, which exacerbates their daily struggles. This article examines the challenges citizens face due to the absence of necessary bridges and highlights the efforts being made to overcome the difficulties stemming from this crisis.

The Absence of Bridges and Reliance on River Ferries

The current crisis in Deir ez-Zor stems from the inability of residents to cross the Euphrates River, following a recent flood that destroyed temporary and emergency bridges. These bridges had provided a temporary solution after the destruction of the primary bridges during years of conflict, and now, residents have no choice but to use river ferries for their transportation.

River ferries are the only means available for residents to cross into the city or countryside, resulting in long lines of vehicles and wait times extending up to three hours if the ferries break down or cease operations.

What Are River Ferries?

River ferries are floating platforms operated mechanically, locally made without clear safety standards, putting civilians’ lives at risk. These ferries are used to transport individuals and luggage, and in some cases, vehicles and trucks. They represent an alternative solution in areas lacking fixed land bridges, making their operation entirely dependent on water levels and engine efficiency.

Costs That Drain Income

The costs of transportation via these ferries are a heavy burden for many families, especially low-income groups such as employees and students. The average cost of a daily round trip is around 30,000 Syrian pounds, equivalent to about two dollars.

Women and the elderly face additional challenges when crossing the river, as one citizen noted that frequent crossings pose significant difficulties, often requiring assistance from others to lift their luggage.

The “Safe Crossings” Initiative

In collaboration with the Directorate of Social Affairs and civil society organizations, the “Safe Crossings” initiative was launched to facilitate crossing and reduce risks. The aim of this initiative is to ensure that elderly individuals can transport their belongings easily while also raising awareness about diseases and other dangers resulting from the conflict.

A Plan for Road Rehabilitation

On an official level, the Syrian government has announced a budget allocation of $37 million to address the transportation crisis. This funding includes the development of vital roads connecting Deir ez-Zor to other areas, as well as the rehabilitation of destroyed bridges and the construction of new bridges to enhance trade and mobility.
