UAE Pursues Strategic Initiatives Beyond the Strait of Hormuz

The article titled “Al Zeyoudi: The UAE on the Path to Reducing Reliance on Hormuz” explores the bold initiatives being undertaken by the UAE to decrease its dependence on the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This vital maritime route has long been crucial for global energy supplies, but recent geopolitical tensions have prompted the UAE to pursue alternative export strategies. Under the leadership of Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, the UAE is laying plans to expand eastern ports, build new terminals, and enhance infrastructure to ensure greater autonomy in its oil and gas exports.

Strategic Plans to Reduce Reliance on Hormuz

The UAE is considering ambitious plans aimed at ending reliance on the Strait of Hormuz. This comes at a time when the world is anticipating the reopening of this important waterway following a temporary peace agreement between Iran and the United States. According to Bloomberg, the country has demonstrated its ability to reduce some dependence on the Strait of Hormuz through an existing pipeline that transports crude oil to its ports on the eastern coast.

Expansion of Eastern Ports

Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade, emphasized the importance of expanding the eastern ports in Dibba, Fujairah, and Khor Fakkan. He explained that the UAE plans to establish another large port on the same coast, which will contribute to enhancing its export capabilities. This expansion will not be limited to the ports alone but will also include investments in new pipelines, rail networks, and roads to improve connectivity between these ports and sources of oil and gas.

Costs and Implementation Stages

While Al Zeyoudi did not provide specific details regarding the costs of these projects or their timelines, he confirmed that the plan has been clearly outlined. The country is currently conducting the necessary feasibility studies to commence project implementation despite challenging circumstances. He noted that the costs of these projects will be supported by improvements to the railway network, with Jebel Ali and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi continuing to hold their positions as key redistribution hubs.

Exploring Alternative Options

Al Zeyoudi added that the UAE is also seeking to explore new options to ensure the export of petrochemicals, liquefied natural gas, and other energy products, indicating its proactive approach toward alternative strategies that allow it to minimize reliance on the Strait of Hormuz.
