New Expansion Contracts for Gulf Electricity Connection with the UAE and Oman
The new expansion contracts for connecting Gulf electricity with the UAE and Oman represent a significant strategic step towards enhancing the electrical interconnection network in the region. These projects encompass integrated efforts aimed at increasing energy transmission capacity, thereby enhancing energy security and contributing to economic and developmental integration in line with the countries’ transitions to clean energy.
Development of the Electrical Interconnection Network
The Gulf Electricity Interconnection Authority has signed contracts for new projects aimed at linking the electrical network between the UAE and Gulf countries. The signing ceremony took place at the authority’s headquarters in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. These projects reflect the commitment of the cooperating countries to achieve energy security and enhance integration in the electricity sector among regional nations.
Project and Expansion Details
The project includes the construction of a double-circuit overhead line with a voltage of 400 kV extending 96 kilometers to connect the Al-Silah station in the UAE with the Salwa station in Saudi Arabia. It also involves the expansion of three main stations: Gunan, Al-Silah, and Salwa, which will enhance the efficiency and performance of the Gulf network. Implementation is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025 and be completed by the fourth quarter of 2027.
Benefits of Transitioning to Clean Energy
This project aims to support efforts toward transitioning to clean energy in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, as it promotes a flexible and efficient electrical network. The strategic design of these contracts ensures that the increasing energy demands in the region are met, based on economic and technical feasibility studies.
Improving Energy Infrastructure
The expansions also include the construction of a double-circuit electricity line with a voltage of 400 kV connecting the Al-Silah station in the UAE to the planned Ibri station in Oman, with a total length of 530 kilometers. This will be alongside the establishment of two transmission stations with a voltage of 400 kV in Ibri and Al-Baynoona, ensuring the incorporation of modern technologies in control and protection systems for the networks.
Ultimately, this project will contribute to significant economic benefits for both Oman and Gulf countries by enhancing efforts to reduce operating and fuel costs. Additionally, the connection of Gulf electricity with the UAE and Oman will support the stability of electrical networks and the flexibility of energy exchange.
