UAEs Role in Restoring Mosuls Spirit of Global Tolerance

The initiative “إحياء روح الموصل” highlights the significant contributions of the UAE in promoting global tolerance and cultural preservation. This effort serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for the city of Mosul, which has faced profound challenges in recent years due to historical conflicts. Through its support for the reconstruction and revitalization of Mosul, the UAE is fostering an environment of understanding and respect among diverse cultures, reinforcing the values of peace and coexistence. This article delves deeper into the UAE’s role in this vital campaign, showcasing how “إحياء روح الموصل” not only restores physical landmarks but also rebuilds the city’s social fabric.

The Historical Significance of Mosul

Mosul, with its rich history, has long been a vital link connecting the north to the south and the east to the west. This unique geographic positioning allowed it to become a melting pot of cultures, embodying principles of diversity, tolerance, and mutual respect. The city is adorned with historic landmarks and artifacts that narrate tales of a glorious past. However, this vibrant spirit was tragically targeted by the destructive forces of ISIS in July 2017, leading to the obliteration of nearly 80% of Mosul’s architectural heritage, including the iconic Al-Nuri Mosque and its leaning minaret, as well as significant religious sites like the churches of Al-Saa’a and Al-Tahera. The loss extended to thousands of ancient manuscripts and precious artifacts.

The Launch of “إحياء روح الموصل”

In February 2018, UNESCO launched the ambitious initiative “إحياء روح الموصل” during a conference in Kuwait, igniting a renewed vision aimed at restoring Mosul’s significance and cultural identity. This initiative sought to reclaim what had been lost to the ravages of war and destruction. Understanding the invaluable nature of this cultural rebirth, the UAE stepped forward to lend its unwavering support, pledging a remarkable funding commitment of 184 million AED (approximately 50 million USD). This historic agreement was reached between the UAE, UNESCO, and the Iraqi government, garnering acclaim from both regional and global communities.

Restoration Efforts and Community Empowerment

Today, Mosul is gradually rising from the ashes of adversity, thanks to a strategic plan that focuses on rebuilding key monuments. The first phase involved restoring the Al-Nuri Mosque and its iconic minaret, followed by the revitalization of the Al-Saa’a and Al-Tahera churches. A subsequent phase, supported by the European Union, includes the restoration of Castle Hammam and other historical sites. Importantly, the vision behind “إحياء روح الموصل” extends beyond architectural rehabilitation; it encompasses a commitment to empower the local population through education and cultural initiatives, laying a robust foundation for the city’s future.

A New Era of Cooperation and Solidarity

According to Rashad Boukhch, President of the Urban Heritage Association, the UAE’s initiative “إحياء روح الموصل” marks a watershed moment in the protection of cultural heritage. It undertakes the noble task of restoring historical sites that represent the collective memory of the city and its identity. The revival of the Al-Nuri Mosque and its leaning minaret, symbols of enduring hope and resilience, alongside the Al-Tahera Church and Al-Saa’a Church, underscores the rich tapestry of cultural and religious diversity. Boukhch asserts that the UAE has effectively communicated a powerful humanitarian and cultural message: heritage is a shared asset belonging to all humanity, and safeguarding our collective history is a moral obligation for future generations.

This initiative exemplifies the essence of Arab cooperation and solidarity, with the UAE standing shoulder to shoulder with its Iraqi counterparts, reinforcing the notion that the responsibility to protect cultural heritage and rebuild war-torn cities transcends geographical boundaries. It unites nations under shared values of peace, love, and coexistence, ensuring that the memory of Mosul as a cultural bridge will endure through the ages.
