$46 Billion Investment Aims to Ease Traffic Congestion

In a significant move aimed at improving transportation infrastructure and alleviating traffic congestion, the UAE has announced an ambitious investment of 170 billion dirhams for transportation and road projects by 2030. This initiative, unveiled by His Excellency Suhail Mohamed Faris Al Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, is designed to enhance connectivity across the Emirates and support the burgeoning population and economy. The focus remains on developing a comprehensive strategy to streamline transportation systems, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Investment Overview

His Excellency Suhail Al Mazrouei detailed the initiative during the annual Government of the UAE 2025 meetings held in Abu Dhabi. The investment encompasses federal and local projects aimed specifically at easing traffic congestion and bolstering mobility within the country. “These projects represent a holistic strategy for developing transportation infrastructure,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of this initiative in meeting the growing demands of the population and improving the quality of life for all residents.

Global Standards in Infrastructure

Al Mazrouei noted that the UAE boasts one of the most advanced and sustainable infrastructures globally. The federal road network is equipped to handle the rising demands on land transport while ensuring sustainable development. Addressing the issue of traffic congestion is a fundamental priority for both federal and local authorities. Continuous efforts are being made to enhance public transport networks, making them more attractive and effective, thereby reducing dependence on private vehicles.

Measures to Combat Traffic Congestion

According to Al Mazrouei, one of the key factors contributing to traffic congestion is the significant rise in the number of vehicles, with an annual increase of over 8%, compared to the global average of 2%. The ministry has laid out several plans and mechanisms to address the challenges of traffic density in collaboration with local authorities, including updating current traffic policies and legislation, boosting public and smart transport alternatives, and exploring new transport corridors with optimal specifications and capacities.

Developments in the Federal Road Network

Al Mazrouei further outlined the ministry’s plans to increase the efficiency of federal roads by 73% over the next five years. This comprehensive development plan includes expanding the number of traffic lanes from 19 to 33 in each direction. Key initiatives involve enhancing main arterial roads, such as increasing the capacity of Al Ittihad Street by 60%, adding 6 lanes, and improving the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road’s capacity by 45%, among others.

Commitment to Innovative Solutions

The UAE’s approach to developing a cohesive transportation network is underscored by significant investments in rail infrastructure. The National Rail Program, launched in 2021 with an investment of 50 billion dirhams, aims to create a comprehensive transport system that connects cities, reduces carbon emissions, and enhances road safety. Al Mazrouei confirmed that Etihad Rail Company is on track to roll out passenger services by 2026, which will align with the UAE’s aspirations for an integrated and efficient rail network that addresses congestion while meeting passenger needs.

This substantial investment of 170 billion dirhams for transport and road projects by 2030 is a clear testament to the UAE’s commitment to tackling traffic challenges, improving infrastructure efficiency, and ensuring a sustainable and high-quality living environment for its citizens.
